Forgiving One Who Has Hurt You

QUESTION: How do you go about forgiving one who has hurt you?

How do you go about forgiving one who has hurt you? It has been a struggle for many people through the years and is one of the most difficult things to do. In fact, it is against our human nature to forgive those who have hurt us.

Carla was devastated through her divorce. She shared her story so others may be healed:

“I knew I needed to forgive my husband for all he had done to me, but I couldn't do it in my own strength. I knew it would take God’s help for me to forgive him. I suffered more than just emotional pain. When he left me, I was pregnant and I later miscarried. It was too much pain and too much hurt. Only time and God could heal the hurt in my heart.

“After God began to show me how much He loved me, I began to get my strength back. When I could see what had happened, I was able to feel sorry for my husband. It took five years for me to forgive him.

“No matter what comes our way, God knows best. I have learned to trust Him and immediately go to Him to discuss any problem. He already knows the problem anyway. I learned God will take care of me no matter what. I know the Lord loves me, and I have learned to trust Him in all circumstances.

“I encourage you to read and memorize Bible verses on forgiving. The most important part of my day is the morning. This is my time with God -- reading and meditating on His Word. I have buried yesterday’s tiredness and in the morning, I take a new lease of vigor. Spending time with God makes me strong and fills me with joy.

“For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you” (Matthew 6:14).

WHAT DO YOU THINK? - We have all sinned and deserve God's judgment. God, the Father, sent His only Son to satisfy that judgment for those who believe in Him. Jesus, the creator and eternal Son of God, who lived a sinless life, loves us so much that He died for our sins, taking the punishment that we deserve, was buried, and rose from the dead according to the Bible. If you truly believe and trust this in your heart, receiving Jesus alone as your Savior, declaring, "Jesus is Lord," you will be saved from judgment and spend eternity with God in heaven.
