Jesus Is God

According to The Da Vinci Code, the early Church saw Jesus only as a human prophet until 325 A.D. when the Council of Nicea determined that Christians would henceforth be required to believe in Jesus’ divinity (pgs. 233-235).

One of the earliest Christian writers, Saul of Tarsis, clearly believed Jesus to be divine. Saul (a.k.a. Paul) writing between 50 and 68 A.D., made many explicit statements about the divinity of Jesus (for example, see 1 Corinthians 8:5-6 or Philippians 2:5-7). These writings were widely used by the early Church in their worship services.

The fact that the earliest Christians worshipped Jesus as God is also supported by extra-biblical writings long before the 4th century.1 It is interesting that The Da Vinci Code almost entirely ignores the crucifixion of Christ, which several extra-biblical records confirm.2

Perhaps this is an intentional oversight related to the recognition of the fact that Christ’s claim to be divine is the most likely explanation for the Jewish leaders’ antagonism towards Jesus which led to His crucifixion (John 10:33, Matthew 26:63-66).

1 For instance, Pliny the Younger, Roman governor of Bithynia in Asia Minor at the end of the first century, wrote to the Emperor Trajan around 112 A.D., observing that the Christians sang hymns to Christ "as to a god." 2 This fact was so widely acknowledged that Lucian, a Roman satirist writing in the 2nd century, made mention of it in one of his comedies.

WHAT DO YOU THINK? - We have all sinned and deserve God's judgment. God, the Father, sent His only Son to satisfy that judgment for those who believe in Him. Jesus, the creator and eternal Son of God, who lived a sinless life, loves us so much that He died for our sins, taking the punishment that we deserve, was buried, and rose from the dead according to the Bible. If you truly believe and trust this in your heart, receiving Jesus alone as your Savior, declaring, "Jesus is Lord," you will be saved from judgment and spend eternity with God in heaven.
