Justice of God

QUESTION: What does the Bible say about the justice of God?

ANSWER: God is Called Judge

“…Will not the Judge of all the earth do right?” (Genesis 18:25).

“I have not wronged you, but you are doing me wrong by waging war against me. Let the Lord, the Judge, decide the dispute this day between the Israelites and the Ammonites” (Judges 11:27).

“Rise up, O God, judge the earth, for all the nations are your inheritance” (Psalm 82:8).

“Don’t grumble against each other, brothers, or you will be judged. The Judge is standing at the door” (James 5:9).

God Judges Sin
“But you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die” (Genesis 2:17).

“The righteous will be glad when they are avenged, when the bathe their feet in the blood of the wicked. Then men will say, ‘Surely the righteous still are rewarded; surely there is a God who judges the earth’” (Psalm 58:10-11).

“Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: ‘It is mine to avenge; I will repay,’ says the Lord” (Romans 12:19).

“For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil” (Ecclesiastes 12:14).

“But they will have to give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead” (1 Peter 4:5).

“This will take place on the day when God judges people’s secrets through Jesus Christ, as my gospel declares” (Romans 2:16).

God's Justice in the Old Testament
God judged many people in the Old Testament. Here are some examples:
  • Adam and Eve (Genesis 3)
  • The corrupt people of Noah’s day (Genesis 6-8)
  • Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 18-19)
  • Egyptian slave masters (Genesis 15:14, Exodus 7-12)
  • The worshippers of the golden calf (Exodus 32:26-35)
  • Achan (Joshua 7)
  • Nebuchadnezzar and his son Belshazzar (Daniel 4:5, 27, 34)
God's Justice in the New Testament
The New Testament also has many examples of God as Judge:
  • The Jews for the rejection of Christ (Matthew 21:43-44, 1 Thessalonians 2:14-16)
  • Ananias and Sapphira (Acts 5:1-10)
  • Herod (Acts 12:21-23)
  • The church at Corinth (1 Corinthians 11:29-32)
Good Will Be Rewarded
“Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commands” (Deuteronomy 7:9).

“But it is God who judges: He brings one down, he exalts another” (Psalm 75:7)

“For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive what is due him for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad” (2 Corinthians 5:10).

“Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing” (2 Timothy 4:8).

WHAT DO YOU THINK? - We have all sinned and deserve God's judgment. God, the Father, sent His only Son to satisfy that judgment for those who believe in Him. Jesus, the creator and eternal Son of God, who lived a sinless life, loves us so much that He died for our sins, taking the punishment that we deserve, was buried, and rose from the dead according to the Bible. If you truly believe and trust this in your heart, receiving Jesus alone as your Savior, declaring, "Jesus is Lord," you will be saved from judgment and spend eternity with God in heaven.
