Promises of God

Promises of God – Which ones are for me?
Is there a way to know which promises of God are for us today? With hundreds of promises in the Bible, how can we tell which are general promises for all of us and which promises are specific promises to a specific person? 1 John 1:9 is a great example of a general promise: “If we make it our habit to confess our sins, in his faithful righteousness he forgives us for those sins and cleanses us from all unrighteousness.” This promise is a general promise to all believers. An example of a specific promise is 1 Kings 9:5, where this is written to King Solomon: “then I’ll make your royal throne secure forever.” By studying the content, we can be clear that the promise is directed to King Solomon.

What are some guidelines to remember?
  • Study the context. What do the surrounding verses say? Who is being spoken to?
  • Is the promise conditional? Look for the word “if” in the context.
  • God gives us promises to help us submit to His will, not to make Himself bend to our will.
  • Do not presume to know when the promise will be fulfilled.
Promises of God – What are some promises?
Here are some promises of God that relate to daily Christian living:

Matthew 11:28-29 – “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Philippians 4:19 – “And my God will fully supply your every need according to his glorious riches in the Messiah Jesus.”

Romans 10:9 – “If you declare with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”

Romans 6:23 – “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in union with the Messiah Jesus our Lord.”

1 Corinthians 10:13 – “No temptation has overtaken you that is unusual for human beings. But God is faithful, and he will not allow you to be tempted beyond your strength. Instead, along with the temptation he will also provide a way out, so that you may be able to endure it.”

John 10:10 – “The thief comes only to steal, slaughter, and destroy. I’ve come that they may have life, and have it abundantly.”

1 John 1:9 – “If we make it our habit to confess our sins, in his faithful righteousness he forgives us for those sins and cleanses us from all unrighteousness.”

Promises of God – Why does it matter?
God’s promises are a spoken or written commitment. If God says He will do something, than He will. If God says He will refrain from doing something, He will. Joshua 21:45 says, “Not one of the good promises that the LORD had made to the house of Israel failed—all of them came about.”

God makes two types of promises:

Unconditional Promises – This is a promise that is made without attaching any conditions whatsoever.

Conditional Promises – This type of promise is subject to certain qualifications or requirements. This is why it is important to understand the context of a promise. It is not wise to pick a random promise and claim it for our own. Perhaps that promise was conditional and we do not meet the requirements.

WHAT DO YOU THINK? - We have all sinned and deserve God's judgment. God, the Father, sent His only Son to satisfy that judgment for those who believe in Him. Jesus, the creator and eternal Son of God, who lived a sinless life, loves us so much that He died for our sins, taking the punishment that we deserve, was buried, and rose from the dead according to the Bible. If you truly believe and trust this in your heart, receiving Jesus alone as your Savior, declaring, "Jesus is Lord," you will be saved from judgment and spend eternity with God in heaven.
